Heartbeat, Jamaica

Few groups better captured the heart and soul of roots reggae than the Abyssinians; the vocal trio's heavenly close harmonies, dark melodies, and Rastafarian themes - all delivered with a deep spiritual feeling - were instrumental in defining and refining the genre. The trio was formed in 1968 by Donald Manning, Bernard Collins and Linford Manning. It their 1969 release 'Satta Massagana', a Rastafarian hymn based on the Ethiopian Amharic language recorded on Coxson Dodd's Studio One label, that launched them into the ranks of reggae music greats. 'Satta Massagana' was an instant classic: an anthem that was heard on the radios, in the dancehalls and in the churches of Jamaica. It was also covered by many other International artists' including Third World. They followed it with a string of hits (including 'Declaration of Rights' and 'Let My Days Be Long') before they disbanded in 1980. However they returned in the '90's and have continued to release new material (including 1998's 'Reunion'). The sound of the Abyssinians has resounded through the hearts of many a Rastafarian devotee and it could through yours too, in this, their Fireside Chat.

The mighty Congos open their hearts in this new epidsode of Fireside Chat on Red Bull Music Academy Radio. Wheel one hour of beautiful roots music and rare insights from one of the most mythical groups in reggae music here.

The Congos formed as a vocal duo consisting of ‘Ashanti’ Roy Johnson (tenor) and Cedric Myton (falsetto), later becoming a trio with the addition of Watty Burnett (baritone). They are principally known for the legendarily slept-on Heart Of The Congos LP, recorded with studio wizard Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry at the Black Ark in 1977. Now considered one of the classic roots recordings, the album was turned down by Island records and underwent a series of setbacks, which prevented it from reaching the audience it deserved. Reissued by the brillant (bud sadly now defunct) Blood And Fire label a few years ago, Heart of the Congos is considered by many as strong an album as such seminal reggae outings as Bob Marley and the Wailers' Natty Dread, Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey, and the Mighty Diamonds' Right Time.

In 2006 Blood and Fire also released 'Fisherman Style' - an album built on versions of their classic track Fisherman, including contributions from Max Romeo, Big Youth, Dillinger and Luciano. This Fireside Chat plays out with Horace Andy's rework entitled Love Love Love.

London, UK

2009 sees Channel One celebrating 30 years on the road as one of London's heaviest hitting roots reggae sounds. Selector Mikey Dread and his brother Trevor grew up around sound systems. Their father, who had run a sound in Jamaica and then Britain in the 1950's and 1960's, passed the mantle of sound boys to them. Mikey and Trevor began selecting in parties in London in the 1970's and started to build their reputation as a sound. In the past 3 decades they have emerged as one of the UK's leading dub reggae sound systems, pushing a positive message of unity and strength, roots and culture through Rastafari. Having recently played Notting Hill carnival for the 26th consecutive year, the sound also plays all over the UK, France, Italy, Norway, Turkey and Croatia. Channel One continue to stay true to the roots of dub, but are also open to the genre's modern descendents. This special mix reflects the Channel One live sound - albeit without the 20k rig! It's a strictly vinyl selection with sirens, effects and Rastafarian chanting by MC Ras Kayleb and was recorded exclusively for Red Bull Music Academy Radio. The people sound like Channel One.

Red Bull Music Academy Radio had the honour to speak to the mighty Aba Shanti and his brother Blood about how through their spiritually vibrating sound they changed the history – and the future – of dub. Feel the (pure) spirit here.

Aba Shanti and his brothers Blood Shanti and Shanti Roots were introduced to roots and culture by their father Alan, who ran a sound system, when they were mere pups. Still, it didn't take long until Aba was travelling up and down the country chatting his conscious lyrics over heavy dub plate mixes to anyone who would listen. Those of you down with the sound system scene in the ‘80s might remember Jah Tubby's rather extroverted mic man known as Jasmine Joe – that was our man Aba.

After converting to a Rastafari, he released his first single Tear Down Babylon in 1993 with his brothers and Rastafarian brethren Samari under the moniker Shanti-Ites, followed a year later by Zulu Warrior. Impressed by their success, they decided to form a record company, Falasha Recordings, with releases including Aba's The Wrath of Jah or Blood's Pure Spirit.

In this Fireside Chat they chat it up about their early days in Hackney and the godly experience that is every single one of their dances, at Notting Hill Carnival or elsewhere.
